Chora has a very different accommodation profile from the beach strip: fewer large resorts, many more small hotels, guesthouses and rented rooms tucked into the town itself and up the hill towards the windmills and Agios Stefanos. Most are entirely relaxed about guests. Small family-run properties naturally notice more simply because there are fewer people passing through, so tell us the name and we will advise before you book.
Parking, alleys and finding your door
This is the genuine complication of Chora and it deserves a paragraph. The old town is pedestrian, the lanes are unnamed to outsiders, the buildings look identical after dark, and satellite navigation is close to useless once you are inside it. Parking is on the edge of town and full from mid-evening.
What solves it: name a recognisable landmark for the final approach. A specific bar, a church, a square. That works where an address does not. The night in Mykonos Town
When the town actually gets going
Later than most first-time visitors expect. Dinner in Chora starts at nine and runs to eleven. Bars fill from eleven, and the town is at its busiest between midnight and three. If you are planning an evening around dinner and then company afterwards, an eleven o’clock or midnight booking usually fits the night far better than a nine o’clock one.
Little Venice and the bars
The waterfront strip at Little Venice is the classic Mykonos evening. Sunset drinks, then bars along the water. It is also extremely public, which is worth bearing in mind. Meeting for a drink first is completely normal and companions are entirely comfortable with it; simply be aware that this particular stretch of Chora is where every visitor to the island ends up at some point in the evening.
After the clubs
Chora empties towards the big clubs and the south coast after two, and then refills as people drift back before sunrise. Late bookings in town are routine in season, and they are often faster than early-evening ones because the roads have finally cleared. Inside the old town
The whitewashed maze itself. Matogianni, the lanes behind it, and the streets running down to the waterfront. Staying here puts you in the middle of everything and makes the final approach the only complication. Arrival is on foot, always, and directions need a landmark rather than an address. It is the most atmospheric place to stay on the island and the most confusing place to find at two in the morning.
The windmills and Agios Stefanos side
Up the hill above the town and along the coast north towards Agios Stefanos and Tourlos. Rather more hotels of a conventional shape, road access to the door, and easy parking by Mykonos standards. Five to ten minutes from the centre of Chora, and considerably simpler for arrivals than the old town. If you are still choosing where to stay and want the town without the maze, this is the answer.
Drafil, Argyraina and the ring road
The less picturesque but very practical band around the edge of town where a lot of mid-range accommodation actually sits. Road access is straightforward, arrival is simple, and you are minutes from the centre without paying old-town prices. From our side these are among the easiest bookings in the Chora area.
